Ruai (The Great Argus) is an endemic bird from West Kalimantan which has become the root of Dayak folklore. The graceful feather of Ruai is considered to have significant value in Dayak culture that represents the beauty of Dayak women and the agility of Dayak ancestors in protecting the nature of Kalimantan. Furthermore, Ruai symbolizes the profound connection between humans and nature, highlighting our integral role within the entire contents of the universe.
The legendary bird is depicted in a series of pots and vases. The Ruai Pots and Vases Series focuses on developing the traditional terracotta vases and pots, which are typically used only for decorative plants such as dried or artificial flowers. This design approach modernizes traditional elements, using glass to complement the porous nature of terracotta. As a result, our pots and vases serve as both decorative and functional items for fresh plants and flowers.
By integrating matte painted recycled glass, the Ruai pots not only enhance the aesthetics of interior pots but also addresses practical needs such as reducing mosquito breeding, simplifying plant watering, and extending plant longevity. While the vases offer the functionality of arranging fresh flowers within terracotta vases.
Crafted by local artisans in Bali, these products ensure minimal energy consumption, primarily during the firing process of the terracotta and the melting process of second-hand glass sheets to create recycled glass. Reflecting on the Ruai’s philosophy and folklore, the series highlight Vestu’s commitment to sustainability and nature through its elegant design.
The series is available in two colors: Black and Terracotta, and consists of Big Vase, Medium Vase, Hanging Pot, Big Pot, Medium Pot, and Small Pot
